Early this year, the Mazda CX-5 finally received a full redesign, getting the brand’s latest Kodo design language and a slew of new features. With only a year under its belt, we anticipate no changes to the 2018 CX-5.

The exterior is expected to carry on with all the same looks that the redesigned 2017 model gained. This newest iteration of the Kodo design brings in a lower, smoother hood; thinner, stretched headlights; 0.4-inch-wider front and rear tread; A-pillars that are pushed back by 1.4 inches; a three-dimensional grille; and a more rounded rear hatch.

Inside, the 2018 CX-5 will also likely remain unchanged. This includes the new and more premium look from 2017, a raised center console, enhanced visibility, two-step reclining rear seats, and a new infotainment system with a repositioned 7-inch center display. The relatively roomy rear seat comes in at 39.6 inches of leg room, and cargo capacity is respectable at 30.9-59.6 cubic feet depending on whether or not the seats are folded.

We also expect the standard features to remain unchanged. If that ends up being the case, expect standard goodies to include 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, a four-speaker stereo, Bluetooth connectivity, and two USB ports.

The powertrain will also likely carry over into the new model year. It will include 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 187 horsepower and 185 pound-feet of torque paired with a six-speed automatic. A previous 2.0-liter engine with less power and a manual transmission option was discontinued for 2017.

The current Mazda CX-5 is an IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus vehicle. Since there are no changes here, we expect this rating to remain the same. Remember, to hit this rating, you must purchase at least the Touring trim with the optional Touring i-Activsense Package ($625 in 2017) or bump up to the range-topping Grand Touring trim – both have the automatic emergency braking the IIHS requires for its highest rating.
